For centuries, Old Testament scholars and historians believed King David was not a historical figure but part of Israelite folklore. Jesus and the Apostles state that Moses is the author of the first five books of the Old Testament. However, most Old Testament scholars teach that the evidence clearly shows, Moses could not have written the Pentateuch and that it was written hundreds of years after Moses in the 8th century BC. Is the Exodus historical? Critics argue that the evidence reveals the Exodus is folklore. Critics argue that there are no extra biblical records for the Exodus in Egypt or the Near East. They also argue that the archaeological data of Canaan does not match up with the Exodus.
