Silence Movie Night
Few know the tremendous Christian history of Japan. Francis Xavier arrived in 1549 and in a few short
years, thousands of Japanese including samurai and daimyo embraced the gospel of Christ. However,
beginning in 1589, the Shogun launched one of the greatest massacres of Christians in history. It is
estimated that nearly 300 to 500 thousand Christians were martyred. The movie Silence based on the
novel by Shusaku Endo, reveals the story of the Christian persecution in Japan through the eyes of the last two Jesuit missionaries to Japan. The movie will challenge your faith and reveal the courage of
the Japanese Christians who gave their lives for Christ.
Martin Scorsese’s SILENCE tells the story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) – at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden.
